Abstract

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is an empirically-validated approach to couples’ counseling based on the science of attachment theory. A licensed mental health professional can use the EFT model with distressed couples and provide them with a “map” to help foster a “safe-haven marriage.” This workshop will review the latest research on the effectiveness of EFT with couples in distress, explain how spouses can connect on a deeper level using attachment theory, and provide the licensed mental health professional with practical interventions that support couples in making fundamental changes to navigate their negative cycles and create lasting connection in marriage. Using this model, the presenter will also include a faith perspective to help Christian couples work through distress.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

  1. Review current research and updates on Emotionally Focused Therapy
  2. Discuss the keys to connect in marriage based on attachment theory and EFT
  3. Identify EFT’s key steps to foster lasting change in a marriage with the guidance of a licensed mental health professional
