Summary
Professional school counselors and other mental health professionals working on behalf of children can be key players in building parents’, teachers’, and students’/ children’s understanding and awareness of the impact of technology and social media. Attendees in this session will learn about the impact of technology and social media on children/students’ academic and social/emotional development. Attendees will also explore various ways that professional school counselors and other helping professionals can best support parents, teachers, and children/students toward creating a healthy balance regarding technology and social media.
Learning Objectives
Participants will:
• Explain the impact of excessive technology and social media use, as well as what constitutes an “excessive” amount
• Identify signs of technology and social media usage negatively impacting children/students
• Outline strategies and techniques to parents, teachers, and children/students to assist with creating and maintaining a healthy balance between technology and social media
