Summary:

Over the years, the cause of addictions has vacillated from being inadequate will power, a sinful and moral infraction, a psychological defect or personality style, to a genetic affliction and disease. Regardless of how it starts, addiction devastates all human spheres – spirit, mind, and body. Sadly, even though the medical and mental health research has shown that all three areas are vital to address and treat in addictions, conceptualizing and implementing holistic treatment that incorporates all three has been lacking. In this workshop, the participants will learn to use an integrated spirit, mind, body model to holistically conceptualize and treat addictions.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will:

  1. Define substance use, dependence, and addiction, and understand the DSM diagnostic criteria for Substance Use Disorders
  1. Outline six stages of addiction, how to recognize them in their patients, and help their patients understand the dangers of these stages
  1. Articulate and describe a model for mind, body, and spirit integration to facilitate a multimodal strategy to halt escalating substance use, address underlying psychospiritual issues, harness the power of neuroplasticity, and develop healthy patterns for stability, wellness, and flourishing,
