Description
Chronic pain affects an estimated 100 million people in the U.S. It is often the gateway to opioid addiction, fueling the current national epidemic. Churches are challenged on how to address pain and opioid addiction, and behavioral health providers may have little training in evidenced-based approaches to treat chronic pain. This workshop discusses the challenges and opportunities involved in helping patients move from hurting to hope.

Learning Objectives
Participants will:
- Describe the human physiology of pain systems and how the brain is rewired with chronic pain and discuss a theology of suffering and the role of pain in the life of a Christian
- Explain how opioids have evolved from standard treatment to the crisis that we currently face, as well as the role of medication-assisted treatment in opioid addiction
- Review the current state of non-opioid pharmacological and non-pharmacological options in the management of chronic pain, including the cognitive-behavioral approach to the treatment of chronic pain
