Summary
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the counseling field is projected to grow at a 25% rate each year from 2019-2029 and Marriage and Family Therapists by 22% for the same period, with more than 385,600 people in these roles already. The number of “faith-based” institutions that have achieved CACREP accreditation has skyrocketed in recent years, and the need for mental healthcare in America is recognized now more than ever. However, there are several coordinated efforts to undermine or destroy the ability of American Christian colleges and universities to achieve their mission statements. These attacks present both threats and opportunities for us to defend our right to exist, exercise free speech, participate in a marketplace of ideas, and advance the Gospel of Jesus Christ through educational avenues.
Learning Objectives
Participants will:
• Name and describe current legal threats against the ability of Christian colleges and universities to have their religious diversity maintained
• Discuss advocacy opportunities of faculty and students at Christian colleges and universities within the counseling field
• Articulate the logistical challenges that Christian colleges and universities encounter when trying to address both secular accreditation requirements and the integration that makes them distinctive
