Summary
Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are serious mental illnesses that cause immeasurable suffering and significant functional impairments in life. Although a historically limited understanding of the brain has handicapped our ability to treat these conditions most effectively, this is rapidly changing. Our vastly increasing knowledge of the brain through neuroscience is driven by many factors—innovative technologies, enthusiastic collaboration with scientists and clinicians from all continents, etc. This rapidly expanding knowledge encourages developing innovative treatments which, combined with existing treatments, will significantly improve treatment efficacy in these conditions. This is evidenced in many ways, including through the FDA’s approval of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Theta Burst Stimulation (TBS) to treat TRD and OCD.

Learning Objectives
Participants will:
• Understand the clinical importance of assessing and identifying TRD
• List different treatment options for psychologists and licensed mental health professionals for TRD (including relative efficacy and risks)
• List the primary brain networks involved in TRD and OCD
