Trauma Care First Aid Certificate Training Details

The stress, uncertainty and losses experienced by people during the COVID-19 pandemic have brought about a crisis in mental health. Rates of depression, anxiety and addiction are rising. Suicides are increasing. People are grieving the loss of loved ones, jobs and the world as they knew it. Those on the front lines such as hospital workers and first responders are getting hit hard with compassion fatigue and traumatic stress. As the pandemic drags on, it is critical that mental health professionals and other caregivers, particularly those in church and community ministry, understand some of the unique challenges facing people and the skills needed to effectively support them. This training will look at the continuum of acute stress to post-traumatic stress disorder and how it is being manifest in specific groups. It will also look at recent research on mental health issue exacerbated by the pandemic such as anxiety, depression and addiction. Training will be offered on effective psychological first aid and triage to help get struggling people to the appropriate level of care. Psychological First Aid (PFA) is an evidence-informed approach that is built on the concept of human resilience. PFA aims to reduce stress symptoms and assist in a healthy recovery following a traumatic event, natural disaster, public health emergency, or even a personal crisis.

Learning Objectives: 

Participants will…

• Examine demographic and research data on mental health implications of the pandemic.
• Review definitions of acute stress, posttraumatic stress disorder, complex trauma and compassion fatigue and discuss how those impact specific populations.
• Discuss the grief issues of the pandemic, including disenfranchised and complicated or prolonged grief that may result from these situations.
• Review basic psychological first aid techniques that serve as effective support across a wide variety of settings.
• Explore assessment, triage and referral tools to get individuals to the appropriate level and mental health care.

Training Includes:

• 4 hours of Group Training on the Impact of the Pandemic on Mental Health and Psychological First Aid
• Certificate of Completion in Trauma Care First Aid
• Resources on Trauma and Mental Health
• 3.5 hours of Continuing Education from the AACC are available for an additional cost ($39)

Continuing Education:

The American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC) offers some psychologists, therapists, counselors, social workers and play therapists Continuing Education (CE) credit due for good standing with certain states and a limited number of professional organizations. It remains the responsibility of each participant to be aware of state licensure and CE requirements.Participants should check their state and/or local regulations regarding required continuing education hours. https://www.aacc.net/continuing-education/

The Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors does not approve continuing education providers. Instead, the Council has adopted rules that outline what is considered appropriate continuing education. This means a licensee can receive continuing education from any person or organization that provides the education in accordance with the Council’s rules. No approval by the Council is needed for the individual or organization to engage in the delivery of continuing education. Licensees are still audited for continuing education compliance and during those reviews, staff evaluate the continuing education documentation submitted. Shannae Anderson, Ph.D.

Dr. Anderson is a licensed clinical and forensic psychologist in private practice in Thousand Oaks, California. She specializes in trauma, addiction, and personality disorders. She is also an adjunct professor at Fuller Theological Seminary where she teaches Pastoral Care and Addiction in the Recovery Ministry Program.

Jennifer Ellers, M.A.

Jennifer is a Christian counselor, professional life coach, crisis responder, trainer and author. She has a master’s degree in Counseling from Wake Forest University. She is Senior Director of Advancement, Special Projects and Church Engagement with the American Association of Christian Counselors. She provides training, consulting and care for issues of grief, crisis, trauma and suicide. She is an approved instructor and faculty with the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation and co-author of several CISM courses. She is co-author of two books including, “The First 48 Hours: Spiritual Caregivers as First Responders”.
