Summary:
Imagine that moment of dread when you look at your schedule and see the name of THAT client. The one who makes you feel confused. The one who makes you scared. The one who makes you angry. The one who makes you question your ability as a clinician. This workshop will help you identify whose stuff it is and then what to do with that stuff. Or professionally speaking, it will explore transference and countertransference within the therapeutic relationship. It will define and give examples of both phenomena as well as certain transference and countertransference themes that often arise in the therapeutic relationship. Lastly, it will provide guidelines and techniques clinicians can use to assess and address transference and countertransference issues.
Learning Objectives
Participants will:
- Define and explain the difference between transference and countertransference
- Identify transference and countertransference issues when they emerge in therapy.
- Describe how to manage such issues in the counseling and medical office.
