 Presenter 

Dr. John C. Thomas is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Certified Sex Therapist, Certified Sex Addiction Therapist, and Certified Substance Abuse Counselor. Dr. Thomas is also a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor, with over 32 years of supervision experience. For overall 38 years, Dr. Thomas as counseled a wide range of problems. His specialties include sexual dysfunctions, sexual addictions, betrayed partners, marital problems, depression, anxiety, anger, and trauma. He is trained in EMDR by its founder, Dr. Francine Shapiro. Dr. Thomas is a Professor at the Department of Counselor Education and Family Studies at Liberty University. He has written many peer-reviewed professional publications, conducts marriage enrichment retreats with his wife, and speaks on mental health and organizational issues. 

 Abstract 

Client shame occurs in every corner of a mental health professional’s office. Shame is a foundational emotional experience in many clinical issues and disorders. It is essential, then, for psychologists and other licensed mental health professionals to be sensitized to shame-prone client stories and choose effective strategies and techniques to promote healing. This workshop will discuss the difference between guilt and shame, healthy vs. unhealthy shame, the neurobiology of shame, and the process and strategies for treating shame.   

Learning Objectives 

Participants will:

  1. Recognize the “faces” of shame in a clinical setting by psychologists and other licensed mental health professionals 
  2. Identify shame and recognize these themes in the client’s communication 
  3. Develop practical strategies and techniques to help shame-ridden clients
