Creating a Holding Space for Christian Clients Impacted by Race-based Trauma

Presenter 

1. Fredrica Brooks-Davis, M.A., M.A., Psy.D., is the founder and Executive Director of the Restoration Center. She consults with the Mother Emanuel Empowerment Center and is the founder of Destiny Empowerment and Consulting Services. She is also the President and co-founder of the Brooks-Davis Institute for Brain Cancer Awareness. Dr. Brooks-Davis has a B. A. degree in psychology, and an M.A. and Psy.D. in clinical psychology with a specialization in program development and consultation. She has published articles, presented at numerous professional conferences, and facilitates workshops and training in public and private sectors. 

Abstract 

In 2020, more than half (61.8%) of the hate crimes (11,129) in the United States were motivated by race, ethnicity, and ancestry bias. Video-enabled electronic devices (e.g., cell phones, tablets, etc.) have made it possible for the incidents of hate crimes to be viewed in real-time or available online within a matter of seconds. Consequently, adults, adolescents, and children often find themselves inundated with information and images that evoke painful emotions and/or raise questions that often go unanswered. With the increase in hate crimes and race-based encounters experienced by people of color, licensed mental health professionals, lay counselors, and clergy willing to create a safe space for feelings to be shared and validated are needed. This Webinar will create a safe space for attendees to learn more about the impact race-based trauma has on African-American communities, the importance of creating a safe space for talking about this type of trauma, and the steps to establish a safe place for those affected by race-based trauma. 

Learning Objectives 

Participants will: 

1. Outline the historical and current impact racism, discrimination, and race-based trauma have on the African-American community 
2. Define race-based trauma and provide examples of race-based encounters 
3. Identify the importance of creating a safe space for those impacted by race-based trauma 
4. Articulate the steps to create a safe space for Christian clients impacted by race-based trauma for licensed mental health professionals and other caregivers
