Abstract

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2021, 12.3 million adults seriously thought about suicide, with 3.5 million planning their deaths and 1.7 million, ultimately, attempting to take their own lives. Tragically, 48,183 people were “successful,” resulting in 1 death by suicide every 11 minutes. Research has shown that there are certain risk factors to completing suicide, which are important for licensed mental health professionals to be able to assess for. For example, Males, who make up 50% of the U.S. adult population accounted for nearly 80% of those “successful” suicides, with the male suicide rate approximately four times higher than for females. Furthermore, depression is the most consistently linked mental health disorder to the highest suicide risk. Yet knowing this has not resulted in demonstrable progress toward reducing suicide rates. Suicide remains a stubborn, highly complex and multifaceted phenomenon. This webinar explores current research on the links between suicide and depression, as well as suggested components for more effective suicide prevention planning, including potential at-risk demographic triggers, and therapeutic interventions for clinicians.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

  1. Identify multifaceted depressive risk factors for suicide evaluation
  2. Describe the connection between depression and the concept of diathesis (a predisposition toward an abnormal state) in suicidal ideation and attempts
  3. Assess for depressive risk factors to aide in individualized suicide prevention planning
