Rita Schulte, M.A., is a licensed professional board-certified counselor. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in psychology and a master’s degree in counseling from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. Rita has a private practice in Fairfax, Virginia, where she specializes in treating eating disorders, anxiety/depressive disorders, as well as grief, loss, and trauma. In April 2011, she launched “Heartline Podcast.” She is currently the host of Mind Matters on KLTT 670 AM radio, Crawford Broadcasting, airing out of Denver, Colorado, and Charisma Media Podcast. Rita also airs a one-minute devotional spot, Consider This. She is the author of several books: Shattered: Finding Hope and Healing through the Losses of Life (Leafwood Publishers), Imposter (Siloam), Think This Not That (Leafwood), and Surviving Suicide Loss: Making Your Way Beyond the Ruins (Moody Publishers). Rita is a speaker for PESI, ACA, AACC, and many other organizations. 

Summary 

Suicide presents challenges that threaten to overwhelm survivors’ physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. The stigma surrounding suicide makes it a difficult topic for individuals struggling with mental health issues and suicide loss, leaving survivors feeling isolated and alone in its aftermath. This Webinar will address specific strategies for soul care and post-traumatic growth (PTG) for suicide loss survivors and those who walk alongside them. It will provide a road map for licensed mental health professionals as they help survivors explore their way toward new sustainable frameworks of meaning by questioning the implied assumptions about life, God, and the world around them that the trauma has challenged. As a suicide loss survivor and psychotherapist, the presenter brings a dual awareness that will help prepare clinicians for their work with suicidal clients and suicide survivors who are left behind. Participants will explore topics such as trauma’s effect on the brain and how to gently plant seeds to instill hope and explore resilience.  

Learning Objectives 

Participants will:

1. Discuss the long-term impact of trauma on the brain to identify why clients cannot just “get over it”
2. Identify common emotional and spiritual issues that survivors of complex trauma face (e.g., stigma, complex grief, shame, existential shattering) and discuss evidence-based strategies to help them rediscover personal strengths and the meaning necessary to move forward after a traumatic loss
3. Outline a list of specific strategies and interventions that foster adaptation and resiliency, including how to use somatic resourcing, shattered vase, jar of grief, art, writing, and mindfulness to cultivate personal and spiritual growth
