Description
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is associated with significant life risks for
health and well-being. Recent research by Barkley et al. (2019) indicates that those risks may be
even greater than previously anticipated with substantial risks for morbidity. Data also exist
supporting the presence of a ???clinically significant religious impairment? in conventional faith
situations for people with ADHD. The current workshop will explore Hathaway and Barkley?۪s
model of the developmental challenges and path arising from ADHD. These challenges include
difficulty sustaining attention in conventional religious settings, internalizing faith principles,
experiencing ???roller coaster? faith, social adjustment challenges, and alienation from the
Church community. The Faith Situations Questionnaire (FSQ) will be introduced as a face valid
clinical instrument with good initial evidence of reliability and validity. The instrument was
developed to mimic in structure the Barkely?۪s Home and School situations questionnaire. The
FSQ can guide data-based intervention with problems that arise from ADHD in children in
several conventional religious situations. Participants will learn the most common problem
situations for children with ADHD in these settings. Use of the FSQ for diagnosis, treatment goal
setting, and process and outcome monitoring/evaluation will be discussed. The balance of the
session will focus on faith accommodative modifications of standard treatment protocols to
address ADHD and its comorbidities. A discussion of how to extend the principles in this
approach to older client populations will also occur. Participants will practice conceptualizing
treatment plans by applying the faith accommodative assessment and treatment approaches to
case examples. The workshop will conclude by considering ways that churches and other
ministry settings can be more effective in disciplining those with ADHD.

Learning Objectives
Participants will:
- Understand clinically significant religious impairment and how it can occur with ADHD
- Use the FSQ as a clinical tool for ADHD diagnostic assessment, treatment planning, and outcome assessment
- Conceptualize treatment plans using a faith accommodative form of standard ADHD treatment protocols
