Description

Approximately 56.7 million people in the United States reported having a disability in 2010
(United States Census Bureau, 2012). Individuals with disabilities often face discrimination and
prejudices that correlate with higher levels of unemployment, earning less money when
employed, and higher rates of poverty than individuals without disabilities (Stoddard, 2014). It
is important that mental health providers understand these barriers and how they are
impacting individuals with disabilities. Mental health providers are in a unique position to
become advocates for this population because they can articulate the physical, social, and
emotional needs of their clients. This presentation will discuss barriers for individuals with
disabilities and strategies to help identified individuals overcome these barriers. Additionally,
presenters will discuss strategies for advocating for individuals with disabilities at local and
national levels.

Presented by: Lacey Ricks, Ph.D. & Sarah Kitchens, Ph.D. & Erik Schmitt, Ph.D.
