Summary:

The diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD) has a lengthy history of negative and pejorative connotations, often decrying such individuals as “attention seeking,” “treatment resistant,” “manipulative,” “difficult,” “drama queens,” and ultimately “untreatable.” Being identified with the phrases “walk on eggshells” and “I hate you, don’t leave me,” mental health professionals are notorious for shying away from treating them and generally refer out quickly, leaving many hurting individuals at a loss for much-needed help. This webinar will demystify the diagnosis of BPD and present the basics of assessment, diagnosis, and treatment in a concrete and accessible manner. It will review the presentation, prevalence, and demographics of the disorder, its etiology including biological and psychological risk factors, and assessment and diagnostic issues (including addressing the question: is it wise to share the diagnosis with a client?). It will explore several evidenced-based treatments, review common transference and countertransference phenomena, and provide crucial tips for successfully treating BPD. Having worked with this population for over 30 years, Dr. Anderson will share her experiences treating this disorder and working with this complicated personality
