Faith-based Reproductive Trauma Care: Clinical Assessment and Treatment

Tuesday, May 12th

6:00 – 8:30 PM ET

Level: Beginner

Presenter: Dr. Caitlin Overfelt is a licensed professional counselor in Missouri, a certified clinical trauma professional, and an approved supervisor. She serves as an assistant professor in the Department of Counselor Education and Family Studies at Liberty University and maintains a private practice working primarily with individuals and couples who have experienced reproductive trauma and perinatal challenges. Her clinical approach is attachment-based, incorporating Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples, Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for trauma. Dr. Overfelt also serves as the Division Lead for the Perinatal Mental Health and Wellness division of the American Association of Christian Counselors, fostering collaboration and expanding resources for providers. Her research aligns with her clinical focus on reproductive trauma and emphasizes interprofessional collaboration between medical and mental health professionals to ensure comprehensive, coordinated care; she has also published research and textbook chapters on reproductive trauma–related topics.

Summary: Reproductive trauma encompasses experiences that disrupt the hoped for pathway to pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting, including miscarriage, infertility, premature birth, and perinatal challenges of postpartum depression/anxiety. With an estimated one in four women experiencing a miscarriage and one in six couples facing infertility, the impact is widespread yet often overlooked by mental health providers and medical providers. Clients frequently develop PTSD like symptoms, depression, anxiety, relational distress, traumatic grief, and isolation. These experiences carry unique complexities with the need for specialized training. In this webinar, psychologists, licensed mental health professionals, and ministry leaders to examine the common psychological, relational, and emotional symptoms reported by individuals/couples who have experienced reproductive trauma. Attendees will examine the evidence-based approaches and clinical targets for clients. Lastly, attendees will discuss the integration of religion and spirituality for a hope-focused approach for willing Christian clients. The goal is to equip providers to offer meaningful support so individuals and couples find healing through compassionate, trauma-informed care.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Examine the common psychological, emotional, and relational symptoms reported by individuals and couples experiencing reproductive trauma.
  2. Discuss trauma-informed clinical approaches and treatment targets for individuals/couples presenting with reproductive-trauma-related challenges.
  3. Identify and explore religious and spiritual practices that can be integrated into care with willing Christian clients.
