Summary
The use of psychiatric medications has become central in the care of many patients with mental health problems. Therapists are increasingly expected to know enough about medications to assist patients in understanding their role in treatment plans. Patients often ask therapists to also serve as patient advocates by communicating concerns and observations about pharmacological treatment to medical providers. Thus, therapists need to have a functional understanding of a broad array of pharmacological treatments.

Learning Objectives
Participants will:
• Discuss pharmacological treatment strategies for anxiety, sleep disorders, addiction, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression
• List the major side effect and lab monitoring issues associated with each type of psychopharmacological intervention
• Identify the factors that guide the choice of which medication to use for common clinical diagnoses
• Describe for psychologists and licensed mental health professionals the evidence-based use of nutritional supplements in the treatment of psychiatric disorders
