Summary
Most people-helpers recognize money and sex as primary causes of conflict in romantic relationships, but they feel they must defer from helping without specialized training. Other people-helpers need to recognize the importance of proactively raising sex and money topics with couples seeking general marriage help. Yet, recent and ongoing research has identified several simple, but crucial, factors beneath the surface of these common tensions. Understanding these “problems underneath the problem” allows both specialized and non-specialized people-helpers to impactfully address these topics with those they serve.
Learning Objectives
Participants will:
• Recognize the lack of training and knowledge present in most people-helpers when it comes to assisting couples with the common conflicts of money and sex in their relationships, as evidenced by recent research with helpers in the field
• Articulate the common fears and values that underlie conflicts around sex and money
• Facilitate current research-informed conversations between couples around these fears and values to improve their relationships
