Is there Freedom After Abortion?
The word freedom has various meanings. In the United States, we have the freedom of speech, freedom of choice, freedom of religion. Biblically, we have freedom to choose our own path and freedom from sin through Jesus Christ.
For many post-abortive men and women though, freedom from past choices is often hard to achieve. They struggle with life after abortion and how to heal.
Many women (and sometimes men) often suffer from deep and serious after an abortion. These women and men may feel trapped inside the bondage of their choice- filled with feelings of shame and guilt.
When women and men feel trapped in the guilt from abortion, they may feel the need to work towards atoning for their sin. This can look like parents who try to be “super parents” or
What Does the Bible Say?
As Christians, we are still in daily battles with sin. But through the sacrificial love of Jesus, we are not slaves to our sin. He gives post- abortive men and women freedom from their bondage.
“Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:34-36).
We Don’t Have to Work for Forgiveness
When it comes to sin, too often people find themselves doing what they can to work for, or atone for, their sins. This is common with those who have gone through the pain and heartbreak of an abortion. Ephesians tells us that it is not our works that “save” us from the punishment of our sin, but by God’s grace.
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)
There is Freedom in Admitting Our Guilt and Our Sin
God does not keep a record of our wrongs. It isn’t a “three strikes and you’re out” deal with God. When he sent His perfect Son to us, He did it as a sacrifice for ALL sins, not just some sin. We are told in Isaiah that He erases our sins and does not remember them:
“I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.” (Isaiah 43:25)
We were created by a forgiving, gracious God. The admittance and repentance of our sins brings freedom- no matter how painful. The book of John tells us that when we know the truth, it will set us free (John 8:32). John 8:36 goes on to say, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” . When we confess our shame, guilt, and sin to our Heavenly Father, He sets us free from that bondage.
You Don’t Have to Do it Alone
God did not create us to be alone. We were created to have relationships with others. Because of this, we cannot, and should not, go through the process of healing alone. James 5:16 says “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed…” The process of healing isn’t always easy or fast. Speaking with friends, family, a mentor, or counselor often helps through the healing process.
