FOREST, VA (August 21, 2025) — Dr. James C. Dobson, one of the most trusted voices for the family and Christian faith in our generation, went home today to be with the Lord at the age of 89. A gifted psychologist, best-selling author, and broadcaster, Dr. Dobson devoted his life to pointing people to Christ, strengthening marriages, encouraging parents, and upholding the biblical foundation of the family. Wherever he went, people would often say, “You helped me raise my children,” and indeed, he did.
Across more than five decades, his influence touched presidents, pastors, and families worldwide. He served on several presidential commissions that focused on family, faith, and decency, and he tirelessly worked to protect, defend, and strengthen the family while always pointing people back to the hope and truth found in God’s Word.
Dr. Tim Clinton, AACC President, shared these words: “Dr. Dobson was truly a modern-day Josiah, a giant in the Kingdom of God. No one in our lifetime has done more for the family as he stood courageously for righteousness in culture. It was my honor and joy to serve alongside him as co-host of Family Talk for many years, and also to serve with him on President Trump’s National Faith Advisory Board. He will be missed greatly. I am deeply grateful for the wisdom and joy he poured into my life. Dr. Dobson, thank you for leading with character, conviction, and compassion. We will ‘hold the line.’ Because of Christ, I know we will see you again on the other side. Well done, my friend.”
The AACC has been deeply shaped by Dr. Dobson’s pioneering leadership on the family and in the field of Christian psychology. His vision continues to influence how we counsel, equip, and serve, and it will guide the next generation of leaders for years to come. The legacy he leaves is now entrusted to all of us as we come alongside parents, families, and children, helping church leaders understand the emotional and behavioral challenges facing the next generation and walking with families as they raise children who are both mentally strong and spiritually healthy.
Even as we mourn, we give thanks for Dr. Dobson’s extraordinary life and the mission that carries forward through the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute. Truly, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints” (Psalm 116:15).
Please join us in prayer for his beloved wife, Shirley, their children Danae and Ryan, and the entire Dobson family. May we also honor his memory by carrying forward the vision he championed—to strengthen families and stand firm on the truth of Scripture.
