Summary:

There is no perfect spouse or perfect marriage. All marriages contain some difficulty, trouble, and suffering. Yet some marriages are not just difficult, they are toxic and destructive, causing damage not only to the relationship itself, but to the people in that home. Faith-based clinicians and medical professionals have been slow to recognize and validate this reality nor have they responded wisely to the real damage caused. In the biblical understanding of headship, this principle does not mean ownership, submission does not mean compliance, forgiveness does not give permission, grace does not erase consequences, and biblical love does not enable destructive behavior to continue to cause harm.  In this workshop, participants will be able to recognize the differences between a difficult, disappointing, destructive marriage, or domestic abuse, and be able to assess individuals for experiencing toxic behaviors that may be contributing to a destructive marriage. Participants will also be able to learn techniques connected to repentance and reconciliation in order to bring the marriage back to a healthy state.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

1.     Recognize the key differences between a difficult marriage, a disappointing marriage, a destructive marriage, and domestic abuse.

2. Utilize key questions to ask to uncover the patterns of toxic behaviors within a marriage

3. Define and apply techniques to bring about true repentance and possible reconciliation within the marriage.
