Summary  

There are some reports found on the internet of famous people (such as, Michelle Obama, Meryl Streep, and Tom Hanks) who talk about feeling insecure and undeserving of their achievements. This phenomena is known as “Imposter Syndrome,” or the feeling that you do not deserve the position or responsibility you have been given. According to the American Psychological Association, nearly 70% of U.S. adults may experience Impostor Syndrome at least once in their lifetime, but recent research has shown that Imposter Syndrome in licensed mental health and medical professionals is not only higher than the general public but can also lead to higher levels of burnout and compassion fatigue.  Highlighting the most up-to-date scientific research, proven evidence-based treatment strategies, and emerging approaches, this workshop will deepen participants’ understanding of Imposter Syndrome and equip them with the most current, evidence-based therapeutic practices to utilize with themselves and clients. 

Learning Objectives  

Participants will:  

  1. Identify Impostor Syndrome types and common triggers and recognize the high cost of Impostor Syndrome on quality of life for both the mental health professional and client.  
  1. Assess hidden causes and catalysts of Impostor Syndrome and determine how modern-day challenges, pressures, and complications contribute to Impostor Syndrome.  
  1. Develop strategies and establish a toolbox of skills and techniques for coping with and combating Impostor Syndrome to decrease burnout and compassion fatigue.
