Summary
Money is one of the top causes of emotional conflict in marriage and romantic relationships. Yet, current solutions tend to focus on non-emotional factors such as budgeting, getting out of debt, and specific money-management techniques. While those are valuable, most couples do not get the most out of those techniques (or avoid them entirely) because, to begin with, they cannot talk about money well. Couple-helpers will learn several common emotional and relational factors that research has found running under the surface of most marriage conflicts (or avoidance) around money. Leaders can help couples navigate these underlying factors as a crucial step to achieving relational peace and to coming closer together on money management.

Learning Objectives
Participants will:
• Identify the need to address the emotional and relational factors around managing personal finances in marriage, rather than solely focusing on technical money-management techniques
• Articulate the common expectations, fears, values, and other emotional factors that run underneath tensions around money, including the avoidance of money conversations
• Explain current research within sessions with licensed mental health professionals between members of a couple around these expectations and other emotional factors to improve their relationship
