Abstract
Emotion dysregulation is a frequently reported symptom of many psychological disorders. This workshop will explore the nature, function, and neurobiology of emotion regulation, as well as its development through securely attached relationships in childhood. The presenter will address how emotion dysregulation manifests when emotion regulation is not adequately developed, as noted in PTSD, addictions, and personality disorders. Practical strategies and exercises for teaching emotion regulation for psychologists and licensed mental health professionals will be presented, and evidence-based tools that can be readily adapted into therapeutic interventions will be covered.
Learning Objectives
Participants will:
- Describe the nature and function of emotion regulation and the psychosocial problems that arise when emotion is dysregulated
- Outline how secure attachment in childhood enables the development of the brain structures that facilitate emotion regulation
- Identify unique strategies for managing and treating emotion dysregulation with practical tools for use inside and outside the therapy room for psychologists and licensed mental health professionals
